Happy Birthday, Chico Xavier

image

Spiritist Francisco “Chico” Xavier was Brazil’s most popular medium of the late twentieth century. For four decades, the bespectacled gentleman captured the nation’s imagination with his reports of communication with the dead. He cornered the market on psychography, the art of writing books dictated by the spirits of the deceased. One of his bestsellers was a book of poetry penned by some of Brazil’s most famous dead poets. A few passages were so accurate, the widow of one deceased poet sued for royalties. Spiritism is a unique spiritualist philosophy in that it accepts the Judeo-Christian hierarchy.

Today’s Saint Louis beer history minute is brought to you by the late Wm. Brunsen’s Wine & Beer Saloon located in the beautiful Benton Park West neighborhood. A mere two blocks from The FTB, this faded sign dates from a time when almost every block had its own tavern, and the man in charge put his name on the door. Now a vacant private residence, this building is classic Saint Louis: sturdy brick, held together with stars, and drenched in beer history.

Outlook Not So Good… 12/21/12

image

Say goodbye to the world as we know it as we sail off of the edge of time’s map and into the great unknown. At least we’ll all be together.

Indulge (for the last time) in a selection of doomsday cocktails and other potables. Ask our in-house fortunetellers what the cosmos hold (for your soon-to-be disbanded individual energy particles). Enjoy the company of your dearest friends as we stare into the future’s yawning maw and toast!

To all: wear your best doomsday/apocalyptic/zombie/conspiracy theorist/Mayan gear. Maybe some of it will help? Free cup of Glüweihn to those dressed prepared. It will fortify your spirits for what’s to come…

We’ll be pouring a special 4Hands Brewery Cask of Cast Iron Oatmeal Brown (with Extra Cocoa Nibs added to the cask) until the beer runs out, so get here early!

Party starts at 7pm 12/21/12 and ends at midnight if the Mayans were right. If not? We’ll party til we can’t party anymore (aka 1:30am)!

Pinckney Bend

Pinckney Bend, located in New Haven, MO, gets it’s name from a navigational hazard on the Missouri River of the same name. Passing through the area with his pal Lewis in 1806, Clark recorded that they had “purchased of a Citizen two gallons of Whiskey for our party for which we were obliged to give Eight dollars in Cash” and seemed pretty inconvenienced to have paid such a steep price.  Aaaaand… craft spirits!

Why does The Fortune Teller Bar cast it’s third eye towards this small geography? Pinckney Bend Distillery. Produced in only 50-gallon batches, its award winning American Gin and American Vodka have won their gold medals and are ready for your enjoyment.  They’ve also got a whiskey (hopefully we can still get two gallons for $8) in the works and hint at a future that also include brandy, grappa and eau de vie.

TFTB is looking forward to introducing Pinckney Bend to our customers once the doors open. We’re also looking forward to an owners field-trip to New Haven (also the home of 2nd Shift Brewery) to, you know, taste-test the products and make sure they’re worthy of you.
